Potensi angkutan sungai di Sumatera dan Kalimantan sebagai daerah penghasil pertambangan (batu bara, timah) dan perkebunan (karet, kelapa sawit dll), maka sungai-sungai besar seperti Sungai Siak, Sungai Indragiri, Sungai Musi, Sungai Lematang, Sungai Kapuas dapat ditingkatkan sebagai salah satu moda Transportasi alternative terhadap moda Transportasi lainnnya ang sudah ada selama ini. Operasinyapun didominasi oleh angkutan cargo dalam barges yang dirangkai hingga mencapai panjang ratusan meter dan ditarik dengan tug boat.
